Hello- I'm an information designer who's interested in the history and evolution of LEGO. In particular, I'm curious about how the colors of the pieces have evolved over time. Somehow it never occurred to me before- but when I was building with my son yesterday I was looking at our collection (from my childhood, now mixed in with his- Blacktron all mixed in with City, it's great) - and I suddenly realized most of our pieces were red, blue, yellow, black and white- with few to no greens, purples or oranges.

So my goal is to figure out - and possibly create some interactive visualization around- the history of LEGO colors. Just started my research so I'm casting a wide net. Can anyone help steer me on this topic?

Some things I'd like to play with along an axis or two:

Quantifiable:
number of pieces, by color, over time
add dimension: area/pips, by color, over time
add dimension: amounts actually produced and/or sold (entered circulation)
known, named colors used and their "lifespans"

The Story:
what were the first LEGO colors? what are they now?
who decides what the colors are/how does LEGO decide?
what events, milestones, and other factors have influenced LEGO colors?
what are the hard boundaries- the rules, written or unwritten, that govern LEGO colors?
where's all this headed?

...that kind of thing, for a start. Really want to dive into this, and if I can create something fun on the other side, all the better. Who can help?

Greetings from a new guy.

Just found this web site this morning and am pretty excited about it... although I couldn't find a favorite childhood guide! I just got back into my childhood legos with my 3 year old son and wanted to find the guide to my first big space lego set my dad built with me when I was between 3 and 5. So the date of the set probably would have been between 1980 and 1983. It was a large, grey space ship with clear green and blue windows and "lights." Though I was looking at it as a young child, I'm guessing it was about 14 inches long.

Here are two unique pieces from the set:

Any ideas of how I could find that guide would be very appreciated!

So, thanks to @annchir and Lawrence over at the Daily Brick I've now, er, 'extracted' information for some 20,000 parts from LEGO.com and the result is here

http://www.brickset.com/parts/browse/

All crowd-sourced and dodgy data from BrickLink has been ditched. This is all 100% official, with the following exceptions:

-Colour names are official LEGO names, but converted to proper case.
-Category names are official LEGO names, but I've created some new ones for Duplo, because for example, the Duplo Bricks and the 'System' Bricks categories are both called 'Bricks' (but with a different category number, which isn't exposed through the LEGO CS site). So if a part has 'Duplo' in its description its category is set to 'Duplo ' + category. This hasn't caught all Duplo parts but has most of them.

The entire list can be exported as a CSV at http://www.brickset.com/export/parts/. Double-quotes are changed to single-quotes in the part name field to prevent the CSV getting screwed up.

At the moment it, and all other reports for that matter, only includes parts for which there is an image at LEGO.com.

As you have probably noticed I did some work recently to capture parts lists from LEGO's customer services pages, and display them on the set details pages.

As a result, the master the parts list has some 26,000 entries, and after combining it with lists from LEGO, the colour and type of around 23,000 of these is known and is shown in the lists [1]

So, there are 3000-odd that we don't know the colour of. I could look at each image myself and enter it but that would take ages and would soon get boring. I am therefore going to try 'crowd sourcing' the data, and that's where you come in.

I'd like you to visit the part identification page at http://www.brickset.com/parts/datacapture/ and follow the instructions. Then repeat 10, 20, 1000 times, until you get bored.

Every part is shown to two people. If they both agree on the colour then it's recorded in the database. If they don't then the process starts again for that part.

Not all colours are shown in the list, just the common ones. This is because identifying some of the silvers, in particular, and light pastel colours is tricky. So, there's a 'None of the above / I am not sure' option and if two people can't identify it then a 'panel of experts' (me, Martin and bluemoose) can take a look and try and assign the right colour.

The page has been trialled with some guinea-pigs and it seems to work quite well.

If it's a total balls-up, parts whose colour is recorded in this way are marked so can be wiped if necessary without affecting the integrity of the rest of the data.

Also, the system records who enters what in a separate table and I will use this to see who has made the most correct entries and will award a prize once it's finished (not sure what yet, I'll come up with something!)

So, please give it a go, and let's see how quickly we can do it!

[1] tomorrow, I'll be rolling out some more parts-browsing pages which will make use of this information. The ultimate aim is to rival BrickLink's inventories but that's a long way off yet!
