SDCC 2013 Reveal: Mixels!

edited July 2013 in Collecting
So the SDCC schedule said today at 1 PM (which was about 10 minutes ago) an exclusive set would be unveiled.

Any guesses? Simpsons? D2C? Something really disappointing?

Excited!!

  • Is it too soon for the Cuusoo Curiosity model?
  • Well that's not exclusive is it...
  • My twitter-fu revealed this:

  • What the hell is that?
  • ^ My thoughts exactly.

  • Seriously? That's the reveal? What the heck are Mixels?
    Pitfall69
  • Seems to be some sort of link with Cartoon Network from the logo on the packaging.
  • Bits they found down the back of the mould machines?

  • Nothing comes up at all from my Google search

I think sometimes people forget that Lego is primarily a child's toy ;)

Looks like there might be a few new parts for @caperberry to play with though!

  • Ridiculous!!!

But the adults have the money to purchase.

  • If this is indeed true....I'll look for them in the discount/clearance section.

^^ True, but if the kids are desperate enough for it...

Looks like it's going to be some kind of cartoon. Googling it comes up with, rather surprisingly, absolutely nothing at all. However, going beyond Google I do believe there is a domain name registered: https://mixels.com/ although there's nothing on there yet either.
  • So exclusive = no one else will sell it?

    Could Galidor have a challenger?

Well maybe not but they still look awful...

Doing a whois lookup on mixels.com produces the following information:

    Domain Name: MIXELS.COM
    Registrar: CSC CORPORATE DOMAINS, INC.
    Whois Server: whois.corporatedomains.com
    Referral URL: http://www.cscglobal.com
    Name Server: NS1.TIMEWARNER.NET
    Name Server: NS3.TIMEWARNER.NET
    Name Server: NS5.TIMEWARNER.NET
    Status: clientTransferProhibited
    Updated Date: 20-jun-2013
    Creation Date: 02-jul-2008
    Expiration Date: 02-jul-2020

CSC (Corporation Service Company) is a company which, amongst many many other things, registers domain names on behalf of large corporations.

Time Warner, as I'm sure most people will know, is an American film and TV company with subsidiaries including HBO, Warner Bros, CNN, DC Comics, Hanna-Barbera, and, oh look, Cartoon Network.

Oh and as well as mixels.com, there's also mixels.org, mixels.net, and for those who can't spell, mixles.com too.
  • mixel shmixel.. bummed it's not something more grown up oriented. The kiddo will probably like it though!
  • Could Galidor have a challenger?

Well maybe not but they still look awful...

I had to look up Galidor. Those things were hideous.

  • I think they look interesting.
  • Heehee! They're so cute! Like little Muppet Mechs or summat. Me likey.

Also VERY interested as to what the IP is and who owns it, whether it has come to LEGO via Cartoon Network or vice versa, were TLG involved from the early stages of character development etc...

Thanks @Shadowedge! I can't see any new parts at first scan, @Paperballpark, but immediately spotted a new element I imagine many of you also did - part 6064 in yellow. Looking forward to this.

  • @caperberry yes that part was almost the first thing I spotted! I get the feeling that while there may not be many (or any) new parts, there could be a few parts in new colours.

Oh and I'd be pretty certain that it's a CN/TW IP, with TLG tagging along for the ride (and possibly involved in the design, given the reveal of the sets before the cartoon!). The website almost certainly wouldn't have anything to do with TW if it was TLG's IP.

    Wow, so many acronyms!
  • Another blurry pic :O)

Saw a tweet describing them as 'mix & match' sets... whatever that means.

Exactly - sets revealed first. And to reproduce such tiny characters in LEGO would be a frickin' nightmare to get right if TLG weren't actually involved from the early stages when characters were nailed down. So my hope is that after Ninjago, TLG are finally cluing up to the new millennium and co-creating integrated IPs that exist on multiple platforms, not just bashing out licensed sets of existing IPs.
  • Fraggle Rock with droids instead of Muppets?

Um.. well the red one looks like a mini devil and the rest just look like sorry excuses for "exclusive" if you ask me.

  • @caperberry, the lighting isn't great so I can't be sure, but might that 6064 actually be Flame Yellowish Orange?
  • Based on the name alone (and maybe the webcam looking thing dotting the "i") I'd say they're going to be something like Life of George for kids.
  • What the hell, a few nice pieces, but perhaps these might have the same fate as other lego lines... Ben 10

Droooooool that would be even better

Good spot. I agree I think this will "exist" as a TV show, substantial online content and in reality as LEGO sets. Maybe not even a TV show, given they can't show programmes based around kids' products in many countries incl. UK. And I swore TV's a dying medium? ;O)

Anyone care to guess what the little red guy's eyes are printed on? A Belville ball with stud? Technic ball joint? New part??
  • I'm really sorry, but these are disgusting.

  • @caperberry Thanks for the Lego.com link. I'll guess the little red guy's eyes are printed Technic ball joint's... or stickers. I'm hoping for printed

These little guys remind me or the robots from #3835 Robo Champ, with interchangeable parts.
  • edited July 2013
OK, now so many questions!!! Those ball joints look totally new to me, can any Technic/Constraction fans confirm?

Angry robo guy looks very metallic in the LEGO artwork, but seriously would they make all those parts in metallic colours? But even if the 'slipper' (1x2 plate with 45 deg slope) is light bley, I'm excited.
  • Also, those new claw pieces!!
  • "LEGO, the LEGO logo, and MIXELS are trademarks of the LEGO Group."

Interesting, I just did a quick search on ROMARIN and CTM online and couldn't find any trade marks containing "Mixel" :-/
  • edited July 2013
Also, is there a 1x2 plate with a ball joint at the end? Looking at the legs of the grey robot, it looks to me like there may be a new part or two. That could also mean new socket pieces as well.
  • Perhaps a set depicting the arrival of the Black Plague to Europe would have been cooler. I don't believe the Castle range has covered that one. They use to teach it in schools.

I think red & yellow chaps have them too, attaching their feet, but seen from an angle where you can't see the ball

  • Another little squee moment - grey guy's eye, how did I miss that! 2x2 eye tile. And yellow guy's 1x1 is a different version, no?

Possibly, It looks to me like the red robot's feet are connected using the black Technic pin with ball, Part ID: 4184169, and it looks like the yellow robot feet use a modified 2 x 2 plate with Towball.
  • Ah yes agreed on the red feet, your link for yellow feet isn't working? Grey guy definitely has the female coupling as part of a 1x2 plate with hollow studs though, that's totally unfamiliar to me?

As are red robot guy's white clawed toes...?
  • It looks as though @caperberry will be satisfied at the very least: http://cache.lego.com/r/www/r/mixels/-/media/Franchises/Mixels/ts.20130710T141443.Mixels-teaser.jpg

Plenty of mileage in all those new parts! While the actual models do not appeal to me, those brand new parts certainly do.
