Does the Brickish association take Amex?

I want to join the brickish association but they seem to only take cheques. My account didnt come with one so do they take postal orders or anything else at all.?

The requirement for joining using a cheque is about proving identity; there have been issues with fake memberships in the past. There are other options for renewing your membership, like paypal, cash, etc.

I'll pass your issue on to the committee, and let you know what they say.

Cheques are being phased out as well, so they'll need an alternative some time!
Not that the banks have really provided a comparable alternative.

Maybe the new barclays paypal competitor recently announced? It was certainly going to have ID validation as part of it, although I'm not sure what ended up in the final released version.

I get why they want to do it that way but they stopped issuing cheque books with accounts so kind means us young uns are stuck :-D

I was elected Secretary at the Brickish AGM yesterday :-)
So, I'm obviously just learning what's what with the procedure but I agree it can be a problem to only take cheques. I'll have to discuss this with the rest of the committee, as bluemoose says.

It's reason why I have not joined, don't own a cheque book and never have in the 15 years I have had my current account and i'm 30. Hopefully something can be sorted.

I agree that cheques are a pain so we need to do something about it. There are ways, so we'll sort something out.

As previously stated in another thread, the cheque issue is why I haven't joined as well. Seems like this is quite a common problem. If you find an alternative you might find yourself inundated with applications @LostInTranslation !

On the cheque front, it's the reason I haven't joined either - I do have a cheque book somewhere, but I never seem to get around to digging it out... :/

I do not think the cheque thing is the only issue. I joined a couple of years ago around September / October, paid by cheque for the annual membership and then the following March / April I was told I had to pay again for the annual membership because my annual membership had come to an end although I had been a member for just 6 - 7 months. I do not care about losing £6 or £60 or £600 for that matter had it been made clear that this is how the membership cycle works. When I enquired about this I did not receive a very friendly response. This and the forum bickering on who bought bricks for sale which were not meant for sale sealed it for me.

Rest assured I am not generalising anything, I am simply drawing the attention of the new secretary to some of the issues / challenges that she will face in the future.

@Monte_net, I'm sorry to hear that your experience of Brickish was not a 100% positive one. My experience so far has been that the Brickish community, like the Brickset community, is overwhelmingly a friendly, welcoming place to be, with many generous, passionate AFOLs with diverse interests and opinions, united by a common love of Lego :-)

To clarify, for any prospective members, BA membership runs from the time of joining to the April of the following year. So for anyone joining from now until the end of December, the membership period will run until April 2013. The membership period for anyone joining in January 2013 will run until April 2014. I agree that in the past this has not necessarily been made clear when you sign up and this is something that I intend to clarify, to avoid just the situation you experienced.

@Monte_net, it's funny, the very issue you mention about the timings is something that was a surprise to me and @Lost when our renewal fees were requested a month or so ago. Somebody else actually questioned it and so we were able avoid the embarrassing task of of raising it - not that we would have, like you say, it was just £6, but it did leave a bitter taste in my mouth at the time because it hadn't been clarified at the time of signing up.

The advantages of being a member though far outway those not. Financial benefits aside, if not just for being able to attend organised LEGO themed functions and meet people who suffer the same addiction, it's got to be worth it. Just the AGM alone (weekend just past) was worth the membership alone.

I think of course it depends on people. but if they are anything like the guys here i will slot in happily. So i await @huw, @lost, @bluemoose and @martin to let me know what happens so i can join the brickish cheerleaders

Update on the payment situation: we are still discussing alternative methods of payment to cheques (like Paypal) for initial subscriptions in the future, but I've had confirmation that a postal order is acceptable as long as it's sent together with the completed, signed application form - an updated version of which is now on the Brickish website:
