The Spiderman License

edited April 2012 in Collecting
It appears that Mega Bloks has a Spiderman 3 license

Could Lego only have the Ultimate Spiderman license? If that is true I think Lego got the better of the two since the character base is greater.

  • Spider-Man 3 is the old movie. The new movie is The Amazing Spider-man, but not made by Marvel Studios (unlike Avengers) hence why any new sets won't be based on the movie, but the cartoon instead (which I'm guessing Marvel have greater rights to).
  • It also looks like those sets on amazon are older as they are mostly sold by third parties with limited stock.
  • Could the original link be replaced with the following?

Mega Brands appears to be producing Amazing Spiderman (2012) sets
  • Perhaps. I'd have prefered to just see the sets done in LEGO, though. Spidey and X-Men are the only properties in the Super Hero license that interest me at all.
  • The new movie is The Amazing Spider-man, but not made by Marvel Studios (unlike Avengers)
I did not know this. Bummer.

  • Why the heck didn't they make a Lego spiderman video game
  • Interesting link. Well if so, then that just means less sets to buy this year.
  • Agreed on X-Men, less so on Spidey...

Lego don't have the rights to the film the Amazing Spiderman this rests with mega bloks. So they (Mega Bloks) get to produce lego sets based off of the movie. What Lego have the rights to is the character, comic and TV series from Marvel so can produce sets based off these but not the movie.
  • That's fine. I'd prefer sets based off the classic Spidey comics, to be honest. In addition to a full roster of the Jim Lee era of X-Men, I'd like Spidey and most of his more iconic villains (Green Goblin, Doc Ock, Vulture, etc.).
  • ^Yeah it would be nice to see that. I think I would expect for the marvel series expect more of the cartoon series than actual comic creations.
  • I also believe that they have the lisence for the avengers comic characters which is why we have seen wolverine and spiderman.
  • The license probably extends to any portion of Marvel that Disney has the rights to. Makes particular sense that the Spidey sets will be off of the cartoon that is currently on the Disney's XD lineup or whatever it is.
  • What doesn't make sense to me is that they supposedly are going to wait till August to release the spiderman set. Why wait till August when the cartoon started a few weeks ago? The season will likely be done by August. Am I missing something??
  • @ytjedi - Marvel is now owned by Disney, so they have rights to all of Marvel licenses EXCEPT what Marvel had committed to other studios before the buyout. But those studios have to make a movie on the license every so many years or the contract dies. Hence another Spider-Man by Sony pictures. I hope it is a great movie, but one reason for it is to keep the contract. The same holds true for X-Men, Fantastic Four, and some others also (Daredevil, Punisher, and Ghost Rider, maybe others), but this is for movie rights only, I think.
  • I can understand why Lego wouldn't release Spiderman in April or May since they probably want to get the most out of Avengers without having Spiderman compete against their own product. DC Batman (Dec/Jan), Marvel Avengers (April), and Marvel Spiderman (late July/Aug). I certainly hope there is some more product in July/Aug (i.e. Batman movie related). Then the cycle will hopefully re-start in Dec 2012.
  • I just hope the reloaded Spiderman film has a better Peter Parker - Tobey McGuire was such a whiney, wussy streak of pee. That whole U-S-A! U-S-A! thing going on was a bit stomach churning too, landing next to a flag at every opportunity etc. Sorry Americans, but I thought it was a bit over the top. The proper Marvel funded superhero films don't shove that down your throat every 5 mins. Spiderman was by far my fave Superhero as a kid, but not a fan of those 3 films.
  • @monkeyhanger - I agree, I wasn't a big fan of those 3 films and hope this reboot will be better. I'm also not liking the new cartoon Ultimate Spiderman, although I have been enjoying the numerous Marvel characters that they've been incorporating. The movies leading up to Avengers and Batman have been awesome on the other hand.
  • I hate the new doctor Ock it looks really ugly, I also prefer the movie Spidermen to the new one, if anyone has some of those older figures I would be happy but they would be really overpriced
  • The new actor playing Spidey seems pretty good in the preview I saw at the Avengers. He has the more typical playful, fun Spidey going for him than sad, weak, depressing Tobey Spiderman. The preview actually made me want to see the movie after first being skeptical!
