The odds are against 76007 being the Fantastic Four, aren't they? Sigh.

Also, quite sad that we get a Spider-Cycle but not the classic Spider-Mobile.
  • I really hope the space stuff is using the space marine armour against those insect sounding baddies (starship troopers anyone?).

I'm guessing the marvel 4 is just a placeholder name.
  • edited September 2012
^^^ Lol. Have you been speaking to the same guy I have today?

You've not mentioned the new Ferrari sets or 'Modular Expansion Pack'. :o)

There don't seem to be many additional sets to be added to existing themes next year.
  • edited September 2012
Marvel 4 could be the Fantastic 4 since a new movie is in production, and scheduled to release next year 2013. Just because they showed some minifigs for the Super Heroes line at Comic-Con... doesn't mean they showed everything.
  • 71001 Minifigures Series 10 - Gold

    Creator:
    31000 Mini Racingcar 3in1
    31001 Mini Jet 3in1

    31007 Power Robot 3in1
    31008 Power Jet 3in1
    31009 Country Home 3in1

Also, we're apparently getting more Ferrari sets and "Modular Expansion packs"
  • "Modular Expansion packs" <-- Whatever that it is, makes me go huh? "If" they are bringing out extra items for Modular sets, that would tell me that the shelf life of a modular sets has been extended, and LEGO has changed their marketing strategy. But that all depends on what a Modular Expansion pack is.
  • I wonder how many different spiderman minifigs we will get.
  • edited September 2012
Well presumably they can expand outwards or more likely upwards. Or it could be some of the missing buildings for the mini modulars?
  • I would assume the modular expansion pack (MEP) is for the mini modular
  • edited September 2012
^ I seriously like to see a lighting kit for them. I know there are unlicensed kits out there, but something direct from LEGO would be interesting.
Or like you said, they could be missing/new buildings for the mini modulars, which makes probably the most sense.
  • I would assume the modular expansion pack (MEP) is for the mini modular

This is my belief. I did enquire about a price bracket which would provide a better clue but it wasn't known. I just think it is weird given there's only two additional mods out right now. Hardly worth the effort but will of course end up buying immediately I'm sure.
  • Could it be these Modular Expansion Packs will be like the Minifigure Accessory packs and add furniture, animals, lamp posts, mailboxes, etc to the existing modular line-up? I'm sure when the price comes out, a better understanding can be guessed... :)
  • ^ Yea, maybe some furniture to decorate the empty modular rooms? Would love some extra lamp posts.
  • I feel MOdular Extension suggests new floors to add into existing. That's why they were called modular in the first place yet not all of us buy multiples to achieve this! One floor at a much lower RRP sounds good to me.
  • ^as much as i would appreciate a "floor extension"-pack i don't think this is what it meant. I meanevery floor would be explicitly for one of the several modulars! So which one shall they produce then? It wouldn't make sense to produce extra floors for CC or GG,i would sign the idea of extensions for the minis or even interior-packs!
  • Another possibility could be a small park or alleyway or other such thing to fit between buildings.

I don't see the point. The market would be incredibly limited. Why buy an expansion pack for a specific retired set when you don't have that set? They would be marketing only to people that have already got a set. Much better to have a more flexible product that anyone could buy and use, whether or not you bought a set five years before.
  • Could the Modular expansion packs be along the lines of additional towns people and street vendors of street furniture to dress up any modular you may have?

You mean like a 'Lego City' or something? Now THERE'S an idea for a theme. Get on it TLG!

    :p

  • 76002 Superman Metropolis showdown 13$
76003 Superman Battle of smallville 50$
    76006 Iron Man Extremis 20$
76008 Iron Man vs Mandarin 13$
76009 Superman: Black Zero Escape 20$
  • Any ideas on who will appear as supermans rivals?
  • Since the spider man sets are based on the TV series.

Perhaps one set is based on episode 3 'doomed'

After a childish argument between Spider-Man and Nova gets their entire team grounded, the super-youths go through S.H.I.E.L.D.'s database of the most wanted supervillains to see who they can defeat and apprehend in order to impress Nick Fury. When the choices Batroc the Leaper, Blizzard, Melter, MODOK, Toad, Whirlwind, and Lady Porcupine prove unpopular, Spider-Man and his team go to Latveria to track down Doctor Doom. The young heroes fairly easily capture Doom, but things take a turn for the worst when Doctor Doom tricks the team into taking one of his Doombots aboard the Helicarrier.

Another could be episode 11 "Venomous"

Venom resurfaces, using Harry as his host, yet again, and this time Harry's neglecting father becomes his main target. While Norman Osborn does not want his potential secret weapon damaged, Spider-Man is confronted with the dilemma of either trying to help Harry on his own or putting his trust in his teammates, who have orders from Fury to finish Venom off.

    Possibly episode 16 "Beetle Mania"

Spider-Man and his team are put on S.H.I.E.L.D. security detail to protect the all-too-critical-for-his-own-health J. Jonah Jameson from the Beetle, a prospect Spider-Man does not enjoy. Things do get personal when Spider-Man must also protect a highly determined Mary Jane, who is on her way to the Bugle for a job interview, from the high-tech villain.

Just speculation of course, but the mini-figs tie in.
  • If the Superman sets are based off the movie, I hope we'll get a different print of the minifig (his suit is updated, darker blue, collar, no pants on the outside...) rather than the existing version. Even the hair could be more slick than the classic 'kiss curl' version.
  • On reflection its more likely to be episode 4 "Venom"

Doctor Octopus' newest creation Venom, an unstable clone derived from a bloodsample from Spider-Man, shows up at Harry Osborn's house party and attacks Spider-Man and the other trainees, jumping from host to host.

Than episode 11 as this features the spider-cycle

  • In addition - I don't know whether the character is due to appear in the movie, or a variation on the character but if 76009 Superman: Black Zero Escape has this guy:
    image
    then I'm in.
  • If its not him it could similar to the group in the Smallville episode "Kandor", where Major Zod and his armies went to war with the terrorist group Black Zero who later destroyed Kandor.
  • Anyone have any more info on the new Ferrari sets? Are these just the 6 Shell promo sets or something different?
  • Could the Modular expansion packs be along the lines of additional towns people and street vendors of street furniture to dress up any modular you may have?

Until we know more, this is what I'm putting my money on.

  • I will buy whichever one has Nick Fury in it even if it sucks so I can get all my Avengers assembled finally.
  • Excited for these two:

76001 Batman vs. Bane - Chase with Tumbler
    76005 Spider-Man - Mission at Daily Bugle

I'm hoping the 76005 is a nice Daily Bugle facade similar to the Diagon Alley HP set.
  • So, let me see what my girls have to look forward too...

More Ninjago, a theme Highly boy focused, with a token female minifig.

Chima, which from the sounds of it is a replacement for Ninjago, with a beyblade like version. A lline with animals, which Lego could have made appeal to both genders, but instead it sounds like another fighting line with probably a token animal female.

City, could have had some interesting innovation. A Park, a school, grocery store, skateboard park, ice rink or a cool museum. Instead, it went with the standard boy orientation of fire/police, and the museum I assume will be along the lines of the bank. Again, sets that have a high appeal to the boy demographic.

Galaxy squad, which sounds like insect space. Considering the last space theme had two females out of all the minifigs in the line, I again expect this will be another highly boy-oriented Fighting theme with 1-2 females at most.

Lone Ranger/Western, which if I consider the old tv show, sounds like it will again be highly focused on the male market/fighting and perhaps a token female.

Super Hero, a line which actually managed to produce a few female minifigs this past year, and which can potentially pull a bit of female interest, despite most of the nod going to the male side. Looking at the set names, though, I think we are lucky to have 1 or 2 female minifigs in that.

Lord of the Rings? If they do more here with the hobbit, there is still next to no hope of them bothering to include a female, since they couldn't be bothered with it with the initial release.

So, basically, out of all those lines, the only line that has a potential chance for my girls is Super Hero, and they had no interest in it this past year. There is nothing that really has any semblence of gender neutrality.

The lines so far are highly split to, here are all these lines if you are a boy, and oh, girls, here is Friends.

What if my girls already like Lego?? They do not want a pet salon. They are not 5 and 6.

What bugs me, is that something like Chima, could be a huge success not with just boys, but with girls. (Just like the Egypt line could have been successful with both or anyone, if it would have been done remotely well.) They just have to tailor the sets appropriately, to include a balance /variety of set types, to not focus only on vehicles, and to have more than one female. At this point, though, I have no faith that Lego will bother with that.

At this point, I have to hope for a line like Monster Fighter late next summer. It frustrates me, because I want to buy Lego for my girls, and I feel like there just is not any New selection they will have interest in with the exception of a set or two of a Friends.

For my son, after looking at these latest set titles, I do not think he will be interested. He is obsessed with aliens, but if the focus is bugs, I am not sure that he will be interested. If the aliens are cute, he may have a bit of interest. Chima he may have interest, but it is hard to say. We will see. The museum theft, he may have interest.
He has no interest in Any Super Hero lines.

  • Well Monster Fighters have had three clearly female figures, with some ambiguous (bat, mummy).

If they already like Lego based on previous offerings, then surely they already like sets with few females in.

Again, sets that have a high appeal to the boy demographic.

In fairness, the LEGO demograhpic is almost entirely boys. Not unreasonable for TLG to cater mostly to its largest market. I would have thought the number of girls that don't like friends, do like lego, but don't like lego police/fire because its too boyish is incredibly small.

  • I was sure that I had seen part 98722 (Batman's wings) was going to be coming in a forthcoming set in black. In fact, it is what prompted me to make the ones in the image below. I now cannot find any reference to it. Was I imagining that I saw that they would be coming in black?

    image
  • ^ Perfect, thanks. I knew I had seen it somewhere!
  • If they already like Lego based on previous offerings, then surely they already like sets with few females in.

The sets they have loved have been
    All Harry Potter
    All Winter Village
    Some interest in Friends
    Some interest in Monster Fighters

Basically, the lines they like have everything to do with the combination of line that are not completely focused on the fight/vehicle model Lego always has and has more than a token female. There is one set that is an exception. One set out of everything out there.

Well Monster Fighters have had three clearly female figures, with some ambiguous (bat, mummy).

    Yes, obviously.
It is no surprise then, this is one of the only lines my girls have interest in. My comments above are in reference for the 2013 lines.
At this time, I have heard nothing about more Monster Fighters, and my assumption has been this is one of those lines they only planned the one release on.

In fairness, the LEGO demograhpic is almost entirely boys. Not unreasonable for TLG to cater mostly to its largest market. I would have thought the number of girls that don't like friends, do like lego, but don't like lego police/fire because its too boyish is incredibly small.

The demographic will continue to be about boys too, when they put out these sort of lines. It becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. Looking at these sets, there is next to nothing my girls would want, and that goes for many girls I know.

I am not saying not to have a large number of lines that cater to boys.
I did not say this was not about liking Friends.

This is about creating better options and choices out there. While I would like that for my girls, I also would like that for my son.

There is also room for more 'neutral' lines. My son absolutely has loved the sets 7-9 of Master Builder. These were all about story-telling and adventure. He loved the various hidden features, that my 5 year old went out of his way to truly expand and create these.

Why not a few more lines like that? Why not a cool polar adventure line, with lots of cool hidden features/scenes/hidden gems. Throw in more than a token female, throw in a few cool animals. Create a vehicle or two, and one has a line than can appeal to many. Goodness, my son would adore such a line and my girls.

I do not want Lego creating an entire year of new Lego sets, where their only option and consideration out of those lines for girls is Friends. I do not mean creating another line for girls, but Give me anything remotely neutral like monster fighters. Give me a cool polar adventure that isn't completely fight/vehicle based. Chima could have been a really cool line that could have appealed to both genders, but I will be shocked if it isn't Ninjago redone. My girls loved the Ninjago show, but there was little done with the sets that appealed to them.

It isn't a matter of not appealing to your major demographic, but tweaking to capture an even wider audience, as opposed to simply excluding them.

If Lego is creating a line to attempt to capture the interest of the girl market, then they seriously need to also consider how they keep that interest. One can't do that with one line. One can, however, do that by having a few lines that truly appeal to both.

I get that despite Friends being successful it is a small portion of the market. At the same time, I really want Lego to be a bit more creative.
  • What about Road Plates? I am wondering if anyone knows if any new types are being created or if the current plates will be repackaged to allow more of one particular type. I don't like how the current 2 sets force you to buy a combination when I really don't need that many intersections. The price is also a little high at $15.

Just wondering if I should go ahead and place some orders using the current TRU B2G1 free sale or wait for a better option.
  • ^ Not sure why they packaged them that way. The same goes for the curved train track being packaged with the switch tracks in #7895. Do you really need 2 switch tracks for every 8 curved? Why not sell them separately.
  • I'm all for selling them separately, or in packs of 2 of the same type. Those cross-road plates are so hard to fit into a layout. I don't mind the curve + t-junction, both are useful.
  • Ferrari sounds interesting. When we will get any new information about new ferrari sets?

Any word on MF sets for 2013?

I was wondering the same thing (assuming by MF you mean Monster Fighters). Will these be one and done? Or will they skip a release cycle and only release in 2nd half of 2013? IIRC, this is what happened with Atlantis. It's possible they will only be "seasonal" - with TLG assuming the demand is only there around Halloween time.
  • ^Thats the most likely, depending if this year's sets continue strong.
  • It's interesting to see how Playmobil, which is a highly-successful, much-lauded, high-quality toy line, has handled the gender issues. While they also have adventure lines, many of them are done in a much more gender-neutral way than Lego has managed.

It's also interesting to see what Playmobil has done with dividing its fantasy theme into Dragons and Princess Fantasy. Lego could certainly do adventure sets with strong storytelling elements instead of fight elements -- ones that are discovery-oriented, for instance. And it could certainly do Kingdoms sets that play off the princess theme.
  • Still waiting to see about Pixar. No word yet? Would movie based lines like that more likely be kept for Toy Fair?
