LEGO pick 'n' mix (UK)

Hello!

What: A box of LEGO will progress through our list of participants, one stop at a time. The box will be a mixed assortment of elements and presumably the more variety we have in there, the better, as it will better suit the diversity of our members and the various applications of our LEGO hobby.

How: I'll start the box and fill to about 800g or so. I'll mail it to the next person on the list. From that point forward, the process should be:

1. Take receipt of the box (do happy dance)
2. Inform the group the box has been received.
3. PM the next person for their address if you haven't already (I'll also have the addresses, but make sure they're available to take the box and pass it on quickly)
4. Withdraw desired parts. At this point there is no hard-fast rule how much this is. Let's just say "If there's a lot of good stuff, don't take it all" and see if a practical guideline springs forth. Don't take all new parts and put in all used.
5. Photograph your haul. Share it with the group. - optional.
6. Choose parts from your inventory that you are adding to the box. It should be roughly equivalent to what you withdraw. Some instances should be easy to match, i.e. polybag for polybag, minifig for minifig.
7. Photograph what you are adding. Keep this to yourself so you don't ruin the surprise, but I think keeping a record of this will keep things on the up and up.
8. Send the box to the next person on the list.

Questions, comments, any glaring omissions? Let me know...

Why: The idea of the exchange is similar to a parts draft in that one person's trash is another person's treasure. While I wouldn't go so far as to say any LEGO is trash, hopefully it will transpire that our bricks find their ways into the hands of appreciative owners. At the end of the day, the shipping costs probably don't justify the parts that one comes away with, so ultimately, this is about having fun, getting to know other members, and strengthening our community.

I'm not sure it's that complicated. It's gonna be a box of lego going round britain. It's not gonna cost me much to put together. It'll be about £3 to post, and if people don't want anything from the box, they won't take anything. It'll cost them £3, I think people are willing to gamble!

So far I've put in a bunch of new parts (mostly from PAB and games I've parted out, it's not gonna be the best selection, but someone might want them) And a separate bag of (very) random used parts, which if you haven't bought any second hand older lego before might be interesting, or might be seen as trash. I've not put very worn bricks in. But some of the clear windscreens are a bit scratched, but since they're not current parts, again they might interest people. We could if people like have a rule about used replacing used etc... but it doesn't need to be strict (and really it should be don't take all new and put in all heavily used, but I think adding all new/looks new bricks is fine).

Gonna part some more sets out tonight and add to the box. Will take pics when done.

Will start the UK thread with this info too. :)

  • I'm in if the photos and sharing them are compulsory.

    Looking forward to this, should be fun!
  • ^^ thanks for getting this off the ground @Savage_Steel.
    Don't forget the pink shrimps, won't be pick-n-mix without the pink shrimps ;)
  • Sounds great. And I like the UK-friendly switch from jambalaya to pic'n'mix :p

    So this is this list of participants for the UK pick n mix as far as I can tell from the previous thread:

    @Savage_Steel
    @princedraven
    @collect_that
    @andhe
    @Redbullgivesuwind
    @Matthew
    @legonut80
    @bluemoose
    @Cheshirecat
    @Legomatt
    @Richo
    @Nerick906
    @Si_Dorking_Surrey_UK
    @legirl
    @LostInTranslation

    The order is in no particular order really, but obviously Sav is first and I've put myself last as I'm happy to ship States-side.
    Have I missed anybody? Everybody still happy to take part and any more takers??
  • I'd like to join in please :D
  • Oh go on then :)
    @Matthew, could you put your editing powers to good use and add @legirl somewhere in the list? Ta muchly.
  • edited March 2012
    It's a shame @Sav is going first, I was looking for someone to donate all my Primo to :)
  • Hey, someone beat me to it!
  • It's going to be a while so we have time to decide still, but just wanted to point out that Savage_Steel should probably get the box from LIT and have some picks from the box. Then she and I could send photos of our respective boxes and see if it's worthwhile to send across the pond
  • ^^ The stealthy ninja mod strikes again...

    ^ Sure, I can send/pass to Sav, no probs. Or she can be penultimate and then I can still take care of shipping to the US.
  • Is this the order it will ship to. i like being between andhe and matthew. Last time i will ever say that.
  • Just realised that people near the end only have a very limited audience to give stuff to, if you see what I mean.
  • ^ Not if we send it over to the US, or we can send it round the UK again if we want to.

    Like I said, there was no real reasoning to the order. I'm sure it can be tweaked if people want to be switched. I'll leave those decisions up to our Team Leader Sav :D
  • ^ this looks great. I am assuming this is the running order then unless we here otherwise. Would be good to confirm on this, but don't see any reason to change it...
  • I don't mind what order it goes in, and if it's going to LIT at the end, there's no reason why I can't place myself somewhere half way down due to impatience! Lol! ;-)
    If everyone PMs me their address I'll sort out running order as some cross overs can be in person. I know I'll see @bluemoose next week. I'm sure my part list won't excite him that much, but someone has to be first (or second!)
  • ^ Makes sense & I'm happy to be #2.
  • are there any rules about postage to avoid box being lost en route e.g. proof of postage? recorded delivery?
  • I'm happy being roundabout where I am. I could do with receiving the package in the next 4-6weeks before life interupts lego.

    As @johnsbricks said, are we going recorded on this?

    @savage_steel I think you have my address in an old PM?
  • I'm not fussed about it going recorded, I think it's personal choice.
    @andhe (and anyone else) please send it again so I don't have to go wading through for everyone's address. ta
  • Dang! I didn't see this thread until now. (wonder how many others missed it)...

    @Savage_Steel
    I posted to you on the other thread, not realising we had this one running. Oops! My apologies, but I was looking for 'UK round robin', or a 'UK' version of rocao's US title.

    I'd just like to add that i'm so glad to be a part of this... i feel so... included!

    Yay!

    :o)

    P.S. I agree that photo's should be compulsory, i.e. what a person adds, and what is taken away. This makes everything both transparent, and is part of the fun (seeing what other people swap over).

    If anybody doesn't want to spoil the surprise of what gets put in, they simply don't visit the photos.

  • ^not worried about getting pants bits are you ;-).

    Im happy where i am. But if someone desperatly wants to be before me thats fine
  • ^not at all, far from it, i'm actually more doubtful that I'd have much of worth to exchange (but never know, I might surprise myself by the time it comes round), so I'm just in it for the fun of it really... so just trying to make myself useful.
    :o)
  • Is it too late to join yet?
  • @legomatt I know what you mean been scratching my head to think of what I can add, it is really hard to think of good bits to add.
  • Sod it, add me too :D
  • ^^tell me about it!!! It might start out a bit weak, but hopefully it will pick up as it goes around :)
    Think I have about 10 addresses so far. Will close the list on Friday.
  • ^ do you still want me to do a PaB tub on Friday?
  • Yes please! I have some personal requests too! Will PM you.
  • edited March 2012
    @Savage_Steel - I pm'd you my address, did you get it? I've also sent a few words to explain my earlier posts. :o)
  • I just had a thought (no, please, don't stand)...

    Couldn't we just add our list to the end of the US box list (which i thought was the original idea - but then, i'm a bit behind recent events), and when the UK leg completes, the last person/people on our list return it to the US box start person.

    PLUS, if the UK list does have a group who plan to meet up when the box arrives (assuming the timing was right), they could bring up the UK list rear (so to speak), and thereby share out the return US post cost (in lieu of having to post inland) amongst themselves. Fair, yes? no?

    (I mean, only if we're struggling to fill the starting box over here).

    OR do we have any particularly generous benefactors amongst the UK ranks, who plan on dropping all manner of stuff into the box to start it off - in which case it makes sense for those persons to be the Start/End space of the sending list, rather than half way down.

    Just a few thoughts...
  • ^ yep, you're a bit behind. Savage_steel is starting a UK box. When the US and UK box complete their respective circuits, we'll compare/discuss to see if it's worthwhile to send the boxes to each other.

    If there are unique things in each, or otherwise still reflect the personalities of the people involved, it may be fun to send. But if it's just a box of regular bricks -- some of which will likely be the most unwanted -- it might not be worth the postage.
  • ^what he said!

    Thanks Matt for your message though, it was appreciated.

    Thanks everyone else for your addy's, still missing some I think. Sorry I haven't replied to each individually, but I'll start a big PM message or a list on here to confirm who's included. Just to reiterate, even if you've traded with me before, please send again, so I don't have to track them down. And that means YOU!

    If everyone is comfortable with their address being shared with the whole group, then it might be sensible to include them all on the PM so they're in one place. But each person needs to confirm with the next that they're around and ready for the parcel (and not on holiday or sick or in labour etc, so they can be moved down the list).

    If we feel like sending it to the states, we will. If not, we won't. We'll see whether the adventure has been worthwhile. :-)

    Still waiting for a replacement brick delivery from LEGO that might contain some treats, or might not...wasn't really sure what I was getting in the end!

    As for requests, I make customs, so if anyone has spare arms, print worn torsos, black hands, then I can probably make use of them, especially if they're languishing in the bottom of your minifig box, and hopefully they'll make it back to me. Ta!
  • ^oh thats a thought ill see what i have and throw it in. How big is this box going to be out of intrest as I was thinking of putting some big stuff in and wanna make sure it is a good size.

    @Savage_Steel yeah I have spent today scratching my head about what to put in now have some ideas. Wont make me popular though.
  • Hi guys, sorry for the slow updates. The box of plastic fun is now with @bluemoose. As I passed it on, it was around 800g. I took some quick pics before hand, which I'll flickr soon, but you won't be able to see every part that's in there.

    There's no obiligation to do the same, but I thought it would be interesting to see what parts go full circle. I know some don't want to do pics, and that's fine, but I'll be happy to nosey at what's happening to it out in the wild, so I hope some people do.

    I'll put the mailing list together asap, but frankly I'm shattered. Awesome weekend at Brickish, plus some model trains with my dad and a bunch of bricklink and minifig orders to sort, and I'm done. Hopefully will mail you all collectively tomorrow.

    Cheers,
    Savage x
  • Oh no! I have missed a whole chunk of this thread and haven't yet sent my address! Am I still in?
  • Well, since I've not done the list, and I now have your address, I guess that makes you and the other guy who mailed this morning, in :)
  • edited April 2012
    @Savage_Steel - Thanks so much for sorting this. Can I ask what the final running order was?
    Cheers,
    rich
  • @Savage_Steel I second what @Richo said. BTW what is the boxes dimensions?
  • Yay, thanks :)

    Hi guys, I've sent out a mass PM to all those who sent me their address. It has the running order for the box and the other details.

    The box is about 20cmx20cmx20cm, though I suspect @bluemoose might package it up in something stronger. The box itself I'm sure will get replaced as it does the rounds.

    If you've not had a PM from me, then you haven't sent me your address. You have a small amount of grace period and can be added to the gang if you send it to me asap! ;-)

    Have fun guys. My baby is due in 20 weeks, lets hope it can make it back to me before then! (Primo is acceptable to me, but maybe not everyone else!)

  • Ah wow, congratulations! Thanks for organising all this! (And if I'm not contactable in 8 weeks, it's because I'm on my honeymoon:P). Fun times!
  • We'd better try and get it done by the end of the month!
    http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/royal-mail-puts-up-cost-780568
  • ^Oh no we can add panic packaging to panic stamps, petrol and pasties...

    On a more serious note, theres not much difference to packages of this size. Below 750g its come down, I assume above that its a little more now, but we should try to stay below 1000g because then its 1st class only and £5.60.

    1st 2nd
    0–750g £2.70 £2.20
    751–1000g £4.30 £3.5
  • Congrats Andhe! didn't you know you were getting married!

    If it goes over 1kg might be worth using parcel force then. but i had this in mind when I made it 800g, gives some room for leeway.

  • or we could use collect+ cheaper. :) http://www.collectplus.co.uk/
  • Thanks! that looks great actually. and picking up from a store if not in is certainly going to be easier than the sorting office :)
  • edited April 2012
    Sorry, yes, I forgot to congratulate you as well Andhe - have a great wedding and honeymoon. Hppe you dont end up getting bitten by scorpions, running across erupting volcanoes, or narrowly avoiding being on a collapsing bridge like we did on ours!

    ^^ Collect+ looks great!
  • Congrats @andhe!
    I've used myhermes before for parcels, they've collected and delivered to me fine, no trekking anywhere for them.
  • ^^ Si, your honeymoon sounds like a scene from Indiana Jones!!

    @andhe Congratulations, enjoy your day, sure it will be amazing :)
